Community Engagement Manager

  Marketing and Communications department

Downtown Indy, Inc. exists to improve Downtown. It is action-oriented and addresses critical issues that affect Downtown’s growth and well-being. DII focuses on planning and development, management and safety and marketing and activation of Downtown Indianapolis. DII has a strong team environment where success depends upon collaboration and coordination within the organization and with other agencies, businesses and government entities.

I. General Description

Function as a member of DII’s Marketing and Communications Team to assist in the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan to position Downtown as a clean, safe and vibrant environment in which to live, work, learn and play.

The position will:

  • Work in tandem with the corporate membership manager in assuring the delivery of corporate member benefits
  • Manage, administer and maximize all of DII’s social and digital media platforms for branding, communications and engagement
  • Enhance and expand digital communications and use/usability
  • Bridge organizational event development and community awareness in order to optimize relevance and engagement
  • Plan and manage community events, such as corporate and/or member mixers with the addition of education – focused forums
  • Serve as the spokesperson for organizational events, DII programs and monumental weekends via media interviews, etc.
  • Manage DII’s comprehensive events database.

Priority skills ideal for this position include experience with media relations, social media execution and special event planning and promotion. Excellence in writing is paramount.

II. Preferred Background, Experience and Skills

  • Communications and/or tourism-related bachelor’s degree
  • 2-4 years communications/public relations and event management experience
  • Strong working knowledge of Downtown Indianapolis
  • Experience with electronic content generation and social media including website content, electronic newsletters, blog posts, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest
  • Knowledge of local media
  • Strong writing/editing skills for journalistic, advertising copy and business communications styles
  • Ability to function on multiple projects with limited supervision
  • Good written and spoken communications skills; able to coordinate and perform television interviews
  • Ability to be proactive and take initiative
  • Ability to develop and implement project plans on schedule
  • Basic understanding of purchase orders, invoices and job estimates

III. Responsibilities

Engage the corporate community, members and non-members, in order to illustrate DII relevance and broaden exposure for DII mission-centric initiatives

  1. Assist in leveraging sponsorship relations with corporate members on the delivery of benefits
  2. Develop a communication strategy that will serve as a foundation for new member acquisitions
  3. Manage volunteer recruitment from area businesses/organizations to help meet DII’s objectives
  4. Assure corporate benefits are being delivered, consistent with each benefit level
  5. Develop communication strategies that will optimize corporate member retention
  6. Plan/manage key constituent outreach initiatives, including annual State of Downtown, and offer planning support for Workforce Week and community forums.

Market Downtown, DII and its programs through public relations, cooperative opportunities and events

  1. Assist in the development of Downtown/DII/Marketing outcomes with DII staff and IDMI Board
  2. Share implementation responsibility with senior vice president of marketing, communications and events, senior communications director, events director, marketing manager and marketing Intern as outlined in communications and events plan and work plans
  3. Promote Downtown as an ideal place to live, work and visit using social media and digital media tools
    1. Generate, post and distribute content
      1. Twitter feed – following, followers and tweets
      2. Facebook page – maintain DII page with help from senior communications director and intern
      3. Blog content and plan
      4. Support and contribute to DII website
      5. Support and contribute to DII app(s)
  4. Work with senior communications director with Downtown and DII program media coverage, press conferences and advisories as appropriate.
    1. Serve as spokesperson for organizational events and DII programs
  5. Maintain media database and assist with tracking as shared with senior communications director
  6. Manage comprehensive events database
    1. Maintain data entry with support from marketing intern
    2. Maintain relationships with local event planners, venues and attractions and other assigned categories
    3. Communicate periodically with assigned categories to solicit event information
  7. Manage promotions/digital marketing for DII signature events and organizational activations of public spaces

Downtown Indy, Inc. offers an internship in the marketing and communications department. The candidates should have strong communication and organizational skills, be able to work with limited direction and on multiple projects, be creative and have strong oral and written skills. Experience with design software (Photoshop, etc.), website content management and AP style guidelines are helpful. Applicants with majors in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising and tourism management are encouraged to apply. A final start date will be determined once a candidate has been selected.

Internship Description

Under the general supervision of the senior director of communications, the intern will:

  • Assist with the Monumental Weekend media relations campaign and news releases and pitch to the local print and broadcast media.
  • Help write and program the weekly e-news publication.
  • Help generate media coverage of Downtown Indianapolis and DII and its programs by developing story ideas, drafting news releases and media advisories and organizing news events and press conferences, as needed.
  • Maintain and update current media kit materials including fact sheets and backgrounders about Downtown history, attractions, events, and DII programs and initiatives.
  • Assist with compiling and distributing Downtown Pocket Map and other printed materials.
  • Assist with maintaining Downtown Indy, Inc.'s web page.
  • Assist with DII events.
  • Assist with design projects.
  • Assist with cross marketing opportunities.
  • Update media database & venue files.
  • Assist with research and tracking as needed.
  • Attend IDMI Board and other key DII partnership meetings.
Interns will receive a monthly stipend along with a parking allowance.
