Indy's Favorite Holiday Tradition
For 55 years, thousands of spectators have gathered Downtown at Monument Circle to see the most spectacular holiday display illuminate. Central Indiana’s most beloved tradition is here again. Downtown Indy, Inc.'s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW #481 will take place the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, 2017.
Generations of families are drawn to this beautiful centerpiece each year with 52 NEW garland strands and 4,784 colored LED lights strung from the top of the Monument to its base. Additionally, the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument will be surrounded with 26 larger-than-life toy soldiers and sailors, along with 26 peppermint sticks.
Entertainers chosen from statewide auditions will share the stage with four professional acts, providing an Indy “Holiday Sampler.” Performers include Sandi Patty from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration; Dance Kaleidoscope’s Mariel Greenlee from World of Christmas; Broadway in Indianapolis’ Ralphie from A Christmas Story and the cast from the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s Lilly presents Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
The actual lighting occurs at approximately 7:55 p.m. One lucky child will be chosen from Carson’s Coloring Contest to help “flip the switch” with Santa and Mayor Hogsett. To conclude the evening, enjoy the Circle of Lights spectacular Fireworks Finale presented by Salesforce.
The decorations on the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument will look familiar: 26 larger-than-life toy soldiers and sailors surround the Circle, along with 26 peppermint sticks. Additionally, 52 garland strands with 4,784 colored LED lights will be strung from the top of the Monument to its base.
Millions of sightseers will take in this brilliant spectacle throughout the holiday season, lit through early January. Travelocity named the Circle of Lights® one of the top five “must-see Christmas trees” in the nation. USA Today also listed the Circle of Lights® as one the “10 Best Holiday Attractions.”
This free public event is made possible by IBEW #481, Carson’s, Circle Centre Mall, Salesforce, Lights at the Brickyard, Central Indiana Chevy Dealers and The Hilton Family - Downtown Indianapolis.
Circle of Lights gets new LED bulbs/stringers for centerpiece
IBEW local #481 retirees have build completely new light stringers that will make up the beloved centerpiece that will be strung on Monument Circle for the upcoming 55th annual Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW #481.
The decorations on the Soldiers & Sailors Monument will look familiar – 52 garland strands with 4,784 colored lights, strung from the top of the Monument to its base. However, all of the strands will be new this year including the use of LED bulbs for the first time ever. These improvements are the first phase of the Keeping Spirits Bright capital campaign with a goal to raise $2 million to further enhance and keep this favorite tradition alive.
The retirees built the stringers from scratch using new garland, cable wire, fuses, sockets and new LED lights. Everything was checked to ensure that all work properly the moment the “switch is flipped” Nov. 24.
