Join us Downtown this week and on Monday, January 15 to experience and engage in several free events that celebrate the life, leadership, and activism of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.! There will be a commemorative wreath ceremony on Monument Circle, a signature Shining A Light presentation, free admission to White River State Park attractions, and creative activities at the Indiana Historical Society. You can bring your friends and family to enjoy these events. This is an excellent opportunity to engage, learn, support, volunteer, and as Dr. King said, "Make a career of humanity!"


Honor Martin Luther King Jr. on Monument Circle


33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration

The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration will be presented by The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC), Indiana Black Expo, Inc., and AFSCME Local #725. This year's program is centered around Dr. King's quote "Walk in the light of Altruism." On Wednesday, January 10, visit the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument for a commemorative wreath placing ceremony at 6:00 p.m. followed by a signature ICRC Shining A Light presentation around 6:45 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held on January 11 at the Indiana Statehouse at noon, honoring four Hoosiers who have followed in the footsteps of Dr. King. The public will have the opportunity to watch the ceremony via a live-stream online.


Shining A Light – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To remember and celebrate the activism, courage, sacrifice, leadership, and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Shining A Light will feature an Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) signature presentation January 10-15. See the presentation nightly at 6:44 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:14 p.m., 9:00 p.m., and 10:14 p.m. on the AES Indiana Building. Before the Shining A Light debut on January 10, the ICRC will gather at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at 6:00 p.m. for a commemorative wreath placing ceremony.


Enjoy Free Museum Admission and Programming


White River State Park

This Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15, White River State Park attractions are offering free admission and special programming all day long. There will be free admission to the following attractions: Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Zoo, IMAX Theater, Eiteljorg Museum, and NCAA Hall of Champions. On this special day, White River State Park will also be partnering with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana to raise money and build awareness for Gleaners’ fight against hunger in Central Indiana. Donation jars will be located throughout the park at each attraction and can also be accepted online. Read on for special programming at the Eiteljorg Museum and Indiana State Museum.

  • The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is hosting a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bring your family and spend the day enjoying art-making activities, a film screening of King in Chicago, a community drum circle, and a presentation by local activist and artist, Wildstyle Paschall. 
  • Family and friends, let’s honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Indiana State Museum! Be a part of community-focused activities, take in multicultural performances, interact with community members, and so much more. 

Indiana Historical Society

The Indiana Historical Society is offering free admission and free parking in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this Monday, January 15. This event is about uplifting, inspiring, and being the change in our community. Witness a performance from Keisha Ballinger and the University United Methodist Church Praise Team, donate to local community organizations, and engage in special storytelling activities. Remember that every day is a great day to do good in your community! Activities will conclude at 4 p.m., but Indiana Historical Society exhibits will remain open until 5 p.m.
