Unique community spaces where the public gather are the hallmark of a great city.

Over the past several months I’ve been cataloging Downtown Indy’s public spaces. These are the community gathering places that make our city center such a great place to live, work and visit. In these open urban areas we meet neighbors, family and friends. We walk our dogs, meet up with colleagues, watch our children play and share unique experiences together. Here are seven public spaces around Downtown Indianapolis. See the full list and map here.

1. American Legion Mall

Circle City IN Pride Festival (pictured) is one of many cultural festivals held in American Legion Mall.

2. City Market Plazas

Bring your lunch or grab a bite from a City Market restaurant and enjoy the outdoor public plazas.

3. Downtown Canal Walk

The Downtown Canal Walk’s three-mile loop is a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts and serenity-seekers.

4. Georgia Street

Food Truck Fridays is one of many events activating Georgia Street in the summer months.

5. Indianapolis Cultural Trail

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick is a world-class urban trail.

6. Military Park
