Monumental decor prep underway; new holiday ornament made with Circle of Lights bulbs unveiled

Retired IBEW #481 union electricians prepare for Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW #481

WHAT: IBEW local #481 retirees will be maintaining the 4,784 multi-color light bulbs that will be strung on Monument Circle for the upcoming 54th annual Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW #481.

Each light bulb is checked, wires inspected, sockets replaced and fuses checked to ensure that all work properly the moment the “switch is flipped.” (The lighting ceremony is Nov. 25.)

WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 9:45 – 11:15 a.m.

WHERE: Indiana State Fairgrounds – Swine Building

WHO: IBEW #481 retirees & Downtown Indy, Inc.

MORE: The actual installation of the centerpiece decor will take place Saturday, Nov. 12 on Monument Circle.  Approximately 200 IBEW #481 volunteers will be on hand to install the 52 light stringers.  The lights are turned on Friday, Nov. 25 during Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW #481 celebration.

WHAT’S NEW: You’re wondering what’s done with the old, burned out bulbs, right?! Each discarded bulb is saved. This year and in 2017, Downtown Indy, Inc. is working with Past Unique, an heirloom creator, who has designed a limited-edition ornament made with one of the actual holiday bulbs that has adorned the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument each holiday season in Downtown.

For many years, each bulb has served its community well and is now being retired to make way for updated technology and innovation. The bulbs are among of the 4,784 lights that have been put in place each year by volunteers from IBEW Local #481 and Downtown Indy, Inc.

Each ornament will sell for $20. All proceeds raised by the sale of these ornaments will be reinvested into the beautification and décor of Downtown Indianapolis.

PURCHASE: The first order of ornaments is being shipped to Carson’s Department Store Downtown this week and can also be purchased online via in mid-October. Additionally, the ornaments will be sold at the Circle of Lights event on Nov. 25. Ornaments will also be available in our Downtown Indy, Inc. office starting Oct. 10: Chase Tower, 19th floor ($20 cash only). Available while supplies last.
